About the Programme

OFFSHOOT is a programme of artist residencies at RHS Garden Bridgewater, exploring the garden and its heritage from a new perspective.

The focus of the Artist in Residence programme at RHS Bridgewater has been developing organically, initially exploring the former historic site of Worsley New Hall. This area of the garden, which at present is largely inaccessible to visitors, is key to the story of the garden. A cosmopolitan wilderness shaped by its geology, industrial past and horticultural redevelopment – themes that connect RHS Bridgewater to a global history and diverse cultures. The residency offers a window into this wilderness and a chance to explore the horticultural and heritage stories it holds.

Since its launch in late 2024, OFFSHOOT has appointed three additional artists. Working alongside internationally renowned photographic artist Yan Wang Preston, three socially engaged photographers joined the programme in 2025, generously supported by National Lottery funding through the Arts Council England. Working with Salford community groups at RHS Bridgewater, Fiona Robinson, Liz Lock and Anoosh Ariamehr lead photography-related workshops and activities inspired by the gardens and gardening.

Throughout 2026, new artwork created by the four artists will be displayed by the programme partners in exhibitions at RHS Garden Bridgewater, Open Eye Gallery Liverpool and Salford Museum and Art Gallery.
